Basic Christianity Lesson ONE 06/25/07
Basic Christianity Course Lesson One “The Creation”

Scripture Reference for this lesson Genesis 1:1 thru 2:25

NOTE: Many people do not realize it but Genesis 1 and 2 are parallel accounts of the same period of time.
• 1. “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2. The earth was without form and void and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.”
• So there was absolutely nothing but water--- you know they try to tell us that the earth is how many millions of years old and all, but if it wasn't there before the scriptural account then it can't be that old.
• 3. Then God said let there be light and there was light”. And that was it which is spoken into existence. It was dark, darkness just being the absence of light and then there was light.
• 4. “And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness 5. God called the light day and the darkness he called night. So the evening and the morning was the first-day.“
• So,in the first day,God created light and he created day and night; and He created them by his spoken word.
• 6. “Then God said, let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters and let it divide the waters from the waters.”
• That word has always bothered me and it probably bothers a lot of people, firmament sounds like it's something firm but it is not. Tt is the atmosphere in which we live --- we call it air.
• 7. “Thus God made the firmament and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament and it was so.”
• Water everywhere there was nothing but water. There was a lot water and God divided the waters and put space between the waters so there's water above what we call heavens. There are many things taught about these waters;but we are not going to look at that detail as it is not important to this study. It's one of those things that, you know, there was nothing but water to begin with, and now,we have the heavens separating the waters above and below.
• 8. “And God called the firmament Heaven. So the evening and morning were the second day. “
• So on the second day god created only the firmament, He separated the waters and put this firmament between them to keep them separated. Then He named the firmament, He called it Heaven.
• 9. “Then God said let the waters under the heavens be gathered together in one place and let the dry land appear; and it was so. “
• Look at how God's doing this He's just speaking it into existence is not doing anything but speaking and it happens . And it was so.”
10.”And God called the dry land Earth and the gathering together of the waters He called Seas. And God saw it was good.”
When He says it was good He is saying that’s the way I want it, it’s just what I planned.
11.”then God said, let the earth bring forth grass, the herb that yields seed, and, the fruit tree the yields fruit according to its kind whose seed is in itself,; on the earth and it was so. 12. And the earth brought forth grass, the herb that yields seed according to its kind, and the tree that yields fruit whose seed is in itself according to its kind. And God saw that it was a good. 13. So the evening and the morning were the third day .”
So on the third day he created the earth and then he put the plants on the earth, the trees ,the herb , the grass ,so the vegetation on the earth were all created on the third day. Each was designed in such a manner that it would produce offspring just like itself, not designed to mutate into something else as some would have us to believe but to produce “according to its own kind”. And God saw that it was good, in other words it was good it was the way he wanted it, He was satisfied that it was according to His plan.
14. “Then God said let there be lights in the firmament of the heavens to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs and seasons and for days and years : 15. And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heavens to give light on the earth; and it was so.”
So God is now going to create all the lights to be found in (the firmament of the heavens) which is all that area above the earth from its surface and upward called heaven. He told us their purpose – to give light on the earth and to be signs for His purposes and to enable us to tell seasons and days and years. .. And next now He will tell us what they are as He creates them
16. Then God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night. He made the stars also. 17. God set them in the firmament of the heavens to give light on the earth, 18. And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good. 19. So the evening and the morning were the fourth day.”
Okay the lights in the heavens were created on the fourth day and will you notice the purpose of them: let them be for signs and seasons and days and years.
For purposes of Astronomy. Astronomy is from God. Astrology is divination and is not of God it is a corrupted use of the lights of heaven. Wherever you are on the earth if you are familiar with the star patterns in that area you can tell directions, you can tell the seasons you can tell many things by looking at the stars and God planned it that way. And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heavens to give light on the earth and it was so, okay. Then God made two great lights the greater light to rule the day the lesser light to rule the night but if you've got a night with no moon and just stars is pretty dark (but you will know the season) but if you do have the stars you can see your way in the dark. So on the fourth day he created the lights in the heavens, the sun and the moon and the stars.
20. “Then God said let the waters abound with an abundance of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the face of the firmament of the heavens. 21. So God created great sea creatures and every living thing that moves, with which the waters abounded, according to their kind, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. “
Did you notice God created everything according to its kind? Not created to be mutated but all were created according to their kind each separate and different AS GOD WANTED them to be SO THEY WERE CREATED. And then He said it was good-just as He wanted them.
22. “And God blessed them, saying be fruitful and multiply and fill the waters in the seas, and let the birds multiply on the earth. 23. So the evening and the morning were the fifth day.”
So on the fifth day God created ALL sea creatures that live in the waters and all birds (winged birds) that fly in the heavens and live on the earth.
24. Then God said let the earth bring forth the living creature according to its kind: cattle and creeping things and beasts of the earth, each according to its kind; and it was so.”
It's interesting that He says each according to its kind, because most animals cannot crossbreed with other animals and the ones that can, when they crossbreed are always sterile each according to its kind. They are to perpetuate their own kind and that's why when they try to crossbreed, normally they can't but if they do the offspring end up being sterile because they're only supposed to produce their own kind.

I really believe that this is where the devil was created because his first appearance is as a serpent, a creeping creature , there is no specific record of when the devil was created but when we look at the devil and what his purpose it is we can see that he was created by God for this specific purpose. And everything on the earth and in the heavens was created in the garden. And later when we cover the stories that churches tell of the devil being a fallen angel or of him being Lucifer and examine them in the light of scripture ,you'll find there absolutely is no way that that case can be made. Because of the confusion brought by the various false teachings in the churches about the devil (satan) we will study him and who he is, what his purpose is and what power he actually has in a Christians life in Lesson Three.

26. “Then God said, let us make man in our image, according to our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth. 27. So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.”
Notice that God created man last. And then when He creates him he gives him (man) dominion (all authority over) all that God has created. The earth and all in it was created by God for man. Man was created in the image of God – had the character and nature of God. He was Perfect like God when he was created. But it was in the image, like God but not God. God gave man a free will, a mind of his own, not a puppet but a free thinking being.
28. “then God blessed them, and God said to them, Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.
29. “And God said; See I have given you every herb that yields seed which is on the face of all the earth, and every tree whose fruit yields seed; to you it shall be for food. 30.Also, to every beast of the earth, to every bird of the air, and to everything that creeps on the earth, in which there (to whom I have given life) is life, I have given every green herb for food; and it was so. 31. Then God saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good, so the evening and the morning were the sixth day. 2:1 Thus the heavens and the earth, and all the host of them were finished.”
So on the sixth day he created all the beasts of the field all a creeping things on the earth, everything that walks or crawls on the earth (all animal life) was created . In the beginning we were not to eat flesh, that didn't happen until after the flood. Also to every beast of the field to every bird of the air and to everything that creeps on the earth in which there is life, I have given every green herb for food. Everything that walked , crawled, creeped or flew on the earth was to eat green herbs, vegetable, seeds and fruits .
Once he created all the other creatures there was only one thing left to create, the apple of God’s eye, the very last thing God created was man, so God created man in his own image in the image of God he created them male and female he created them ,then God blessed them and said to them (mankind including those not yet born}, be fruitful and multiply, fill the earth and subdue it, have dominion over the fish of the sea the birds of the air, over every living thing that moves on the earth and over the earth itself.. Now what did he leave out, what did he not give man dominion over? He reserves only the heavens for Himself that part of His creation that cannot be actually seen or felt, the Spiritual realm. He did not leave out anything else He created, the earth and every living thing for man. Everything was created for man and man was given absolute dominion over every living thing that moves on the earth, everything in the seas and that flies over the earth. All of God’s physical creation was given into the hand of man.

God saw everything He had made and indeed it was very good you notice everything was good but the day he made man it was very good because the apple of his eye, the one He created it all for, had now been created so the evening and the morning was the sixth Day. And the heavens and the earth and all the host of them was finished. This is another way of saying that everything within them was finished, every single thing that was on heaven or in earth was created by God and it was finished on the sixth Day, whether it was the fish of the seas, whether it was a whale, whether was a porpoise, an octopus, whether it was the devil ,everything on the earth and in heaven was finished on that day on the six Day. Gods plan was complete.

Now we will look at chapter 2 of genesis. Gen 2:4-3:1
Gen 2:1-4

1.“Thus the heavens and the earth, and all the host of them, were finished. 2. And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done. 3. Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made. 4. This is the history of the heavens and the earth when they were created, in the day that the LORD God made the earth and the heavens, 5. Before any plant of the field was in the earth and before any herb of the field had grown. For the LORD God had not caused it to rain on the earth, and there was no man to till the ground;”
So the Lord God had finished His creating and all was as He wanted it so now He was done and could rest. So He rested on the seventh day and sanctified it, it was a special day, God’s creation was complete and God was rested and now time as we know it has begun.
6.” but a mist went up from the earth and watered the whole face of the ground. 7. And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being. “
And now we see how God formed the man, God actually formed him from a substance that God had made. God made man from something that is less than nothing, the dust of the ground, God’s most prized possession was formed out of the dirt. So we can always be reminded and aware of who is in charge, who is the created and who is the Creator. And then into this inanimate chuck of dirt God placed some of His Spirit, ‘He breathed into his nostrils the breath of life’ the very breath of man is a direct personal gift from God. He did not take a chance on this, God Himself formed and then personally gave life to this man.
8.” The LORD God planted a garden eastward in Eden, and there He put the man whom He had formed. 9 And out of the ground the LORD God made every tree grow that is pleasant to the sight and good for food. The tree of life was also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. “
And now we see also why the Lord ‘needed to rest from all the work He had done’. Did you wonder why God needed to rest after speaking all these things into existence? Well now we know God did some physical work also. You see God himself “planted a garden and prepared it ‘ for the man that He had created. Look at how much care that God took with everything that was made for this man He had created. Do you see how important this man is to God, this is the creature that is now in charge and in control of ALL of God’s natural creation. And God put everything He had provided for food into a special place, “planted a garden’ for this man. And did you notice there was not even rain to disturb the man’s life, ‘a mist went up from the earth and watered the whole face of the ground.’ Do you see how carefully and completely God prepared this earth to take care of the man he had made. And did you notice God even put two extra trees in the garden He prepared for the man? The tree of the knowledge of Good and evil and the Tree of Life. We will look at these two trees a little later.
We will skip verses 10 through14 in this study as they are not pertinent to this study.
15. “ Then the LORD God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to tend and keep it. 16 And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, "Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat; 17 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die."
Now God has given this man possession of the garden that He God Himself had made for him. And the lord gave the man an instruction, one command only. That there was only one tree in this garden that was off limits to him, The Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. Only one item on the whole earth was he not allowed to eat, the fruit of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil.. Now remember there was also a second special tree, the Tree of Life, but he was allowed to eat the fruit of that tree. Eating the fruit of the tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil would impart to him the only thing that God did not want him to have, because, without this Knowledge there was no good or evil, all was good as far as the man knew. His reliance was to be on God according to the plan. But if he was to get this Knowledge he would then be in a position where he would see things differently, he would have choices that God did not want him to have and he would start depending on himself, not on God. He would have shed his protective cover that God had supplied. So God told him not to eat this fruit. I believe we can also look at this tree as being a tree of Obedience with severe consequences for disobedience. The tree of life, which God wanted and allowed him to eat from is just that, The Tree of Life, which the new testament tells us is eternal life. If he would eat of that tree in his original state, being like God, sinless he would have receive eternal life. He would Live, not Die. He would not fall from the grace of God and would continue in the life God had prepared for him.
18. “ And the LORD God said, It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a help meet 19. Out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to Adam to see what he would call them. And whatever Adam called each living creature, that was its name. 20. So Adam gave names to all cattle, to the birds of the air, and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a help meet.”
Note: your bible translation may say a “helper comparable to him” or something similar but the correct translation is help meet.
Did you notice that the beasts and the birds were also hand made by God, and because God had given the man complete dominion, he was given the responsibility of naming all the creature and God brought them to him to be named.
21. “And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall on Adam, and he slept; and He took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh in its place. 22. Then the rib which the LORD God had taken from man He made into a woman, and He brought her to the man. 23. And Adam said:"This is now bone of my bones And flesh of my flesh; She shall be called Woman, Because she was taken out of Man." 24. Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. 25. And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed. “
So here we find God making the helpmate for the man Adam (notice now he has been named by God) He had created. She had to be ‘of the same kind ‘as Adam an animal would not do as God created everything to reproduce after its own kind. So God puts Adam to sleep and removes a rib with which He will make for Adam a mate (help meet). Adam means Ground or from the ground.
Please pay close attention and get this next part as it is Extremely important.
Why did God not make the Woman from the dust of the earth like He did Adam? Look at verse 24 “they shall become one flesh” God removed a piece from Adam thereby making him INCOMPLETE. To be complete he needs the woman, who is, contains, what he is missing. The man is incomplete until he becomes one flesh (thereby restoring what he is missing) with his woman (wife). That is why he is commanded to leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife. She does not receive this command because, depending on the culture, she is either bought (usually by dowry) or given to her husband. (who gives this woman to be wed to this man). Oh if only everyone could see this and understand it before marrying. That is why marriage is so important and it can only be a Godly marriage if both understand how important it is to become one flesh with your spouse and to forsake all other relationships if necessary for this Godly relationship. Men – ladies you are not called to be best friends with your spouse you are called to a much higher relationship. You are to become ONE FLESH.
They were both naked and were not ashamed because they only knew good and everything was good, there was yet no evil loosed on the earth..

The earth and all of Gods creation was finished in six days and God rested on the seventh. So seven days was the period of time of the creation. So was this seven days as we see them ? Well I really don't know, you know one day is as a thousand with the Lord and so there's a lot of studies that say seven days were actually 7000 years ,it's totally immaterial in studying about the basics of the of the character and nature of God, whether it was seven days as we know them or 7000 years as we know them, it really doesn't matter however long they were in that first period of time. God created everything there was nothing that we know and probably some things we still don't know that were not created in that seven days ,everything that exists in our world including the heavens was created in those seven days. And if they want to say it's a thousand years who cares, if they want to say seven weeks who cares it was a period of seven days however God measured time at that time , that he created it and everything that is and exists in what we consider the world and in the heavens was created at that time. That's all we really need to know about that and it was all created by the spoken word of the living God or by his hands and this is the history of the heavens and the earth when they were created in the day that the Lord God made the heavens and the earth .
